Our 18th- and 19th-century antique European Oak is crafted from genuine historic timber reclaimed from barns, mills and architectural structures across France and wider Europe. Many boards are circa 200 years old, some reaching back three centuries. Their surfaces carry medieval patinas, softened contours, irregular widths and the unmistakable depth of timber shaped by centuries of use. Reclaimed From the Barns and Mills of 18th and 19th Century Europe

This is our oldest collection, with antique oak flooring lifted from European buildings that stood through the 18th and 19th centuries – all left unfinished, so nothing comes between you and the surface it already had. This collection is also incredibly flexible, and can be used as overlays, wide planks, parquet, chevron, herringbone and bespoke panels, in solid and engineered construction, cut to the widths the original timber allows. An oak of this age grew slowly and was worked by hand, then left in place for generations while weather, use, and time continued working on it. That history shows in the colour, which moves through browns and greys rather than holding one tone across a room. It's also in the grain, which is tighter and more figured than anything grown to a modern schedule. Antique wood flooring at this age is finite. Each parcel comes from a specific building and cannot be repeated once it is gone, so widths, lengths, and colour are best confirmed against the material actually in stock. Each piece brings an authentic sense of provenance and reads as easily in a period restoration as in a plain contemporary room.

How Old Oak Flooring Settles Into a Room

Old oak floors carry a weight that new timber cannot bear. The colour runs deep and uneven, brown warming towards amber where the light crosses it, holding shadow in the hollows left by generations of footfall. Underfoot, the surface is soft rather than flat. Contours rise and fall by fractions, and the light gathers in them differently as the day moves. In a period property, the effect is one of return, as though the floor had been lifted, cleaned and put back where it always was. In a newer interior, the same boards give a room something its walls cannot yet offer: time already spent. Timeworn flooring of this kind rewards restraint. Plaster, stone, linen and unlacquered brass all read well against it, because none of them competes for the eye. Rooms with this floor tend to need less of everything else, because every board was old before it was ever a floor.
