London, England
Once constrained by an awkward and disorderly layout, this family house in Highgate has been reconfigured with exemplary clarity — function and flow now lead the plan. Conceived initially by Philip Lihou of Inner Space London, the project has since been sensitively re-worked by XUL Architecture to fulfil the client’s wish for a bright, characterful family home.
XUL, recognised for their deft handling of space and light, began by studying the building’s circulation and the paths through which daylight could be drawn deeper into the plan. The result is a sequence of calm, luminous rooms in which materiality and craft are held to a high standard. A considered mix of finishes and textures adds quiet depth and dimension throughout.

Manoir Oak Chevron & Herringbone Parquet
The architects have rooted the scheme in a clear design idea: Reclaimed Manoir Oak flooring runs through the refurbished entrance hall, the conservatory-style family room, the main living room, and the relaxed dining area. Modest in tone yet rich in presence, the oak’s enduring patina heightens the spatial character and acts as a calm, natural canvas for the wider palette.
